Facebook overtakes Google

From March 7th to March 14th Facebook stacked up more hits than Google in the US for the first time, ever.

For people like me who were beginning to see Facebook as slightly passé and small fry next to the god that is Google this is BIG news. Google is an internet giant and I can barely remember my life online before it. Neither can I imagine my life without it, as other search engines don’t seem to compare favourably. On the other hand, Facebook competes with many social mediums, like Twitter, my current favourite platform of all time.

Given this perspective, perhaps it is only natural to be shocked by the statistics. My own love of Google makes me wonder how any social media platform, let alone Facebook, could outperform it.

These may seem like strange thoughts coming from someone who writes for a social media cafe. Don’t get me wrong, I do love social media and it can be incredibly useful for making connections and even doing research. But I’m not a member of generation Y. I remember dial up. I remember web 1.0.

We’ll have to wait and see if this week’s statistics continue the trend found in last week’s numbers. In the meantime, I’ll try and recover from the shock with a nice cup of jasmine tea. Then tomorrow I’ll meet a friend for drinks and we can talk about how old we feel.

How does the news affect your outlook? Feel free to point and laugh.
